Thoughts On Stormie’s New Book and Two Giveaways!

Disclosure: I was sent Choose Love by Stormie Omartian’s Choose Love marketing team to participate in a book review. The thoughts and opinions are my own. In addition I will not be receiving compensation for this review.

Hey Yo!!! Book review time!! This is not the first time I have read a Stormie book (yeah-her name is Stormie-like for real-I love it) so I was excited when onelyric was chosen to review her newest book on the block, Choose Love.

Choose Love

Choose Love challenges the reader to consider 3 choices:

1. Choose To Receive God’s Love for You

2. Choose To Express Your Love for God and

3. Choose To Love Others in a Way That Pleases God

I assumed (oops) with the title being about love that this would be a warm and fuzzy read about the ever present and never failing love of my Abba Father.

Well- I was wrong.

In the opening pages I was challenged by Stormie with the following lines:

‘Sometimes we think we know who God is, but if we ever doubt His love for us, then we don’t really know Him.’

Hmm..yeah I have doubted. Recently. I have never doubted God’s existence. I just wonder if He really cares about the mess I am constantly talking to him about. I wonder if He is bored with our conversation. Sometimes I am bored with talking.

Stormie gave me something to consider: ‘God’s love is real because He is real. And He is love.”

These things I have always believed. That God is real. That His love is real. That He is love. Even in believing, it is different to consider that sentence as a complete thought, instead of three.

To consider that in fact it is simply one truth, that to know God is to know love, because God is love. And to be absent of God’s love is to be absent of God himself.

Holding onto that thought, Stormie suggests we have a choice. Choose God and His love, together, or choose to live without love and without him.

With this in mind, the book was an excellent and challenging read.

I also found myself confronted with the way I identify with love, and they way I show love.

There were two stand-out chapters for me, both found in the Choose to Love Others In A Way That is Pleasing To God section. (surprise, surprise)

First, Stormie thourougly unpacks the eight characteristics that describe what true love does not do in 1 Corinthinans 13:4-6. Most of us have heard this scripture at a wedding but here it is again for you to ponder:

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek it’s own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things ~ 1 Corinthians 13 :4-7

Choose Love opens this verse wide open and several times I was convicted of masquerading love as something that it is not; envious, puffed up, prideful and rude. I was also challenged on the last characteristic of love,  that it ENDURES ALL THINGS.

If you have been a reader of onelyric for awhile you know I am in a race called motherhood with a two, three and a six year old and oh my, some days they win, although I probably prayed 500 times that day for self-control to make it through the day alive. (all of us, all of us alive)..

BUT those last chapters of this book are highlighted and underlined with healthy reminders for my soul – He is the only one who sustains us with the perseverance so we can endure what we are facing- And another nudge for my weary endurance- The Holy Spirit is our helper and comforter. He is our counselor and teacher. He helps us do what we cannot do on our own. He is the one who helps us bear, believe, hope, and endure all things.

I want the Holy Spirit to burn that into my soul.

Overall the book is wonderful.  At the end of each chapter Stormie gives the reader scripture to review and meditate on as well as helpful prayers if you find yourself tongue-tied.

When Christian’s become complacent in their relationship with God they forget about the power of His love, or the reality of it’s existence.  I know I have.  Choose Love is a nice reminder of the wonder of God’s love, and His purpose for love in each of our lives.

Swapping gears-since this love thing has been on my mind lately, so has an old hymn the husband re-aranged on his new CD, The Love of God.

The lyrics in the final verse of this song are beautiful.  Just beautiful.  The kind that hurt in a good way. Even more thought provoking, these lyrics were found etched into the wall of a patient’s room in an insane asylum after his passing. Although the patient is not the original writer ( a Jewish Rabi is ), he still clung to the words until the end. The writer of the hymn then added two additional verses creating The Love of God.

I am going to write more about this song in another post-but while choosing to believe that God’s love is real, this song puts words to it’s magnitude. Enjoy.

~The Love of God~Josh Misener, Sierra Blickens~ written by Frederick M. Lehman. Chorus written by David Lunsford~

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star
And reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled
And pardoned from his sin.

When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall;
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call;
God’s love, so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

Chorus:

Oh the love of God, Oh the love of God,

His never-ending love, is always enough.

  1. boy…talk about needing to choose the Love challenges (1 Choose To Receive God’s Love for You/ 2 Choose To Express Your Love for God and/3 Choose To Love Others in a Way That Pleases God). I’ve been going through a living hell for the past month…had a big falling out with my son and daughter-in-law. Trying really hard to handle it “Christlike” but feel I’m failing with everything I’ve tried/am trying. Struggling with God’s love for me, struggling with expressing my love for God, and really struggling with loving others in a way that pleases God.
